Completed around 2022 for a Melbourne client, this custom Messmate dining table began with a design the client had seen on Pride Furniture's Facebook page. Don developed the idea into a substantial 2000 x 1000 mm one-off table made for the client's own home.
The Messmate top uses a double-edged construction to create a deeper, more substantial profile. Black resin fill follows the timber's natural feature lines, adding contrast while retaining the individual character of each board. A clear two-pack finish brings out the grain and warm timber tones while providing a practical surface for everyday dining.
Australian-made metal X-leg bases, finished in black powder coat, give the table its strong contemporary form. The dark bases balance the visual weight of the top and create a clean contrast with the Messmate.
This project shows how an existing idea can be adapted through timber choice, proportions, edge treatment, resin detailing and base design to create a dining table with its own character.
