A table designed around the room

Custom sizing is useful when a standard table is too small, too large or simply the wrong proportion for the room. It also allows practical details to be considered before the build begins: everyday seating, occasional guests, chair clearance, access into the home and how the table will sit beside surrounding furniture.

Bring rough room measurements, the number of people you usually seat, photos of the space and any reference images you like. Don can then discuss what is practical and how the design, timber and finish could work together.

This 2100 × 1100 mm Messmate setting was made for a client near Glenlyon. The tapered timber legs and clean underframe keep the design refined, while matching Oslo chairs create a coordinated setting.

Made for a Melbourne home, this 2000 × 1000 mm table combines a character-rich Messmate top with black resin detail and Australian-made powder-coated steel bases.

Dining and living-room tables

A broad timber dining table forms the centre of an open-plan room, with darker base elements helping connect it visually to the accompanying living-room pieces.

Recycled hardwood outdoor table

This substantial outdoor table uses recycled Jarrah, red gum, Brushbox and Ironbark. The different colours and natural markings are retained as part of the finished character.

Furniture made from a home’s original floorboards

Reclaimed hardwood floorboards from the client’s home were prepared and reused across a collection of tables and other furniture, keeping the material’s history connected to the renovated interior.

Timber, proportions and finish

The right choices depend on the room and the way the table will be used.

• Size and seating: Allow for everyday seating, guests, chair movement and clear access around the table.
• Timber: Grain, colour, natural feature and availability all affect the finished piece. Messmate and recycled hardwoods are represented in Don’s existing dining-table work, with other timbers considered where suitable.
• Base and profile: Timber legs, steel bases, edge depth and underframe design change both the appearance and the practical clearance below the table.
• Finish: The finish should suit the timber, the desired appearance and normal use. Don can discuss the most appropriate option for the proposed piece.
