Custom Wall Units, Media and Vinyl Storage

Handcrafted in Daylesford, Victoria
Storage works best when it is designed around what the room actually needs to hold. A television, stereo equipment, vinyl collection, books and display pieces all place different demands on the dimensions, layout and materials of a cabinet.
Pride Furniture creates custom wall units, entertainment units, stereo and record cabinets, library units, bookcases, shelving and sideboards from Don’s Daylesford workshop for homes across regional Victoria and Melbourne. The piece can be planned around the available wall, the equipment or collection, the balance of open and closed storage, and the way the room is used.

Storage designed around the room
Standard cabinets can leave awkward gaps, dominate a smaller room or fail to accommodate the items they were bought to hold. Custom sizing allows the overall width, height and depth to be considered alongside doors, drawers, adjustable shelves, display space and the visual weight of the finished piece.
For media storage, include the dimensions of the television, amplifier, turntable, speakers and other equipment, along with the access and cable routes they require. For books, records or a collection, think about how much needs to be stored now, what should remain visible and whether the piece needs room for the collection to grow.
Don can also discuss whether a freestanding cabinet, a sculptural bookcase or a unit made for a particular part of the room is the more practical direction.
Real wall-unit and media-storage projects
2PAC and Messmate entertainment unit
Built for a living-room wall, this project combines dark 2PAC cabinetry with Victorian Messmate. Open shelving, lower storage and a central area for the television bring media, display and practical storage into one composition.
Custom Messmate stereo and record cabinet
This cabinet was made for vinyl records, hi-fi equipment and CDs. Drawers, open record storage and a central equipment area organise the collection while keeping the equipment accessible.

Custom Tasmanian Oak library unit
A freestanding library unit made from solid Tasmanian Oak, with open shelving, a hand-wiped stain and a durable 2PAC lacquer finish. The project shows that substantial storage does not need to be built into the wall to feel considered for the room.
Tasmanian Oak under-stairs bookcase
This solid Tasmanian Oak bookcase turns the angled space below a staircase into useful open storage and display. Its shape depended on careful measuring, planning and joinery rather than a standard rectangular cabinet.

Custom Jarrah ladder bookcase
Created for a Daylesford customer, this 1400 × 2200 mm Jarrah ladder bookcase was designed to display a valued runner collection. Warm Jarrah shelves step across a dark A-frame, combining useful display space with an open sculptural form.
Custom timber sideboard with sliding doors
Made for a Musk customer, this sideboard uses solid Messmate throughout, including the sliding doors, with routed finger handles and dovetail drawers. The brief was to complement the customer's existing furniture with Pride's own details. Its dimensions and finish should be discussed separately for a new commission.
What the piece needs to hold
- Television and media: Allow for the screen, equipment dimensions, cable access, controls and the balance between open display and concealed storage.
- Vinyl and hi-fi: Record dimensions, equipment placement, drawers, open bays and the way the collection is browsed all affect the layout.
- Books and display: Shelf depth, spacing, overall height and the size and weight of the collection should be considered early.
- Everyday storage: Doors, drawers and sliding fronts can hide practical items while open shelves keep selected objects visible.
- The room: Wall dimensions, skirtings, stairs, doorways, access and surrounding furniture help determine whether the piece should be freestanding or made for a specific position.
Timber, cabinetry and finish
Material choices can change both the appearance and the practical character of a storage piece. Don’s completed work includes solid Tasmanian Oak and Jarrah, character-rich Messmate, painted 2PAC cabinetry and combinations of timber with darker cabinet finishes.
The most suitable approach depends on the design, intended use, available material and the rest of the room. Grain and natural feature may lead the design of a one-off timber cabinet, while a mix of painted cabinetry and timber can create contrast across a larger wall unit. Don can discuss handles, drawer and door arrangements, shelf details, colour and finish once the main function and proportions are understood.
How to start your project
- Send Don photos of the wall or room, rough overall measurements, and the project suburb and postcode. Say whether you need a freestanding piece delivered, wall-mounted furniture or cabinetry measured and fitted.
- List what the unit needs to hold, including equipment dimensions, record quantities, books or display items where relevant.
- Include reference images and any timber, colour, door, drawer or shelving preferences you already have. You may also include a preferred timeframe and an optional approximate budget.
- Don will discuss the layout, materials, practical constraints and what information is still needed before pricing.
- Once the scope is agreed, Pride Furniture can confirm the quotation, deposit and expected next steps.
Delivery, fitting and project scope
Furniture orders are welcome from Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. PFF freight is quoted separately from the furniture price and confirmed for each project. Include the delivery suburb, postcode and any access constraints.
Wall-mounted furniture and fitted cabinetry need a separate discussion about measuring and installation. Each project is assessed individually, starting with local fitting. Melbourne fitting is not yet confirmed. Furniture delivery does not include fitted-cabinetry installation, and interstate installation is not promised.
Pride Furniture focuses on new custom timber furniture and suitable bespoke cabinetry. Laminate cabinetry, furniture repairs and restoration are not offered. Verified 2PAC and timber projects remain examples of bespoke work; Don can discuss appropriate materials for your brief.
Frequently asked questions
Can a wall unit be made for a specific wall or awkward space?
Yes. The entertainment unit and under-stairs bookcase are examples of storage developed around particular parts of a room. Accurate dimensions, photos and access information are important before the design is finalised.
Do you also make freestanding storage?
Yes. The Tasmanian Oak library unit, Jarrah ladder bookcase, stereo cabinet and sideboard show several freestanding approaches, from open display shelving to low closed storage.
Can a unit be designed for vinyl records and hi-fi equipment?
Yes. Pride Furniture has completed a Messmate stereo cabinet with space for vinyl records, hi-fi equipment and CDs. Send the equipment dimensions and explain how you use the collection so the arrangement can be discussed.
Can timber be combined with painted cabinetry?
Yes. The 2PAC and Messmate entertainment unit combines dark cabinetry with Victorian Messmate. The right combination will depend on the room, the scale of the unit and the finish you want.
What should I send with an enquiry?
Useful information includes room photos, rough wall dimensions, the items to be stored, equipment sizes, preferred open or closed storage, project location, access details and any reference images.
Do you take projects in Melbourne and regional Victoria?
Pride Furniture is based in Daylesford. Furniture orders are welcome from Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, with PFF freight quoted separately. Fitting is assessed individually and starts locally; Melbourne fitting is not yet confirmed. Include your suburb and postcode and say whether you need delivery or fitting.
